Which Canary Island Is Best for Whale Watching?

Tenerife, clearly, and it is worth understanding why rather than taking it on assertion.

Why Tenerife wins

The Teno-Rasca strip off the south-west coast is the only Whale Heritage Site in Europe, about 70,000 hectares of protected water. The channel between Tenerife and La Gomera holds the largest resident population of tropical pilot whales in Europe, plus resident bottlenose dolphins.

The geography is the cause: the seabed drops steeply very close to shore, producing deep and unusually sheltered water within a short run of the southern harbours. Deep, calm, close — that is what supports residents rather than passers-by, and it is why boats can offer high sighting rates on a two-hour trip.

La Gomera

The same channel, the same animals, and genuinely excellent. Fewer boats and a quieter experience. The catch is access: unless you are staying on La Gomera or willing to build the day around the ferry, Tenerife’s southern harbours are far easier to reach.

The other islands

Gran Canaria has trips and sightings, without the resident concentration of the Tenerife–La Gomera channel. La Palma and El Hierro sit in deep water with real cetacean populations but very little organised infrastructure. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, in the shallower eastern waters, do not compare for resident cetaceans — they are better islands for other things.

If you are choosing an island for this

Base yourself in the south-west of Tenerife — Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje or Los Gigantes — and you are within a short transfer of every boat that works the channel. That is the practical version of the answer.

The thing worth repeating

Being the best island for whale watching does not make every boat here good. The rules on approaching a pod are strict and enforcement is reported as patchy, so the operator you pick still matters more than the island.
